Preface
Assistive technology for blind and visually impaired people (VIPs) has opened up a vast array of possibilities in the area of access to text through the use of braille translators, synthetic speech and screen magnification; and there are aspects of ICT which can enhance independence for the elderly. Yet there are fundamental problems in the digital environment such as: The explosion of graphics; the emergence of Web 2.0; and a lack of consistency in convergence. Common standards and new economic models are required if the comparative disadvantage of VIPs is to be kept to a minimum.
